One of the more disgusting myths the no-regulation, pro-gun extremists keep lamely attempting to use as a defense of their indefensible position is that gun violence in America isn't THAT bad, when compared to other countries.
Thankfully, Richard Florida and the team at The Atlantic magazine decided to debunk that extremist blather, and post the results on the map below.
As they noted, "The pattern is staggering. A number of U.S. cities have gun homicide rates in line with the most deadly nations in the world." Check out just a few of the statistics they found:
- If it were a country, New Orleans (with a rate 62.1 gun murders per 100,000 people) would rank as the nation with the second highest rate of gun homicides in the world.
- Gun murder in Newark (25.4) and Miami (23.7) is comparable to Colombia (27.1).
- Washington D.C. (19) has a higher rate of gun homicide than Brazil (18.1).
- Phoenix's rate (10.6) is slightly higher than Mexico (10).
- Los Angeles (9.2) is comparable to the Philippines (8.9).
