A Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin stated his opposition to abortion even in the case of rape by saying “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” “Ways to shut that whole thing down”? Akin makes it sound like some kind of Wonder Twins super power. “Rape Pregnancy Prevention Powers—Activate!” Akins said that if the rape baby prevention system somehow fails, then “there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” Note that the rape victim is never mentioned. I have no idea what a “legitimate rape” is, Todd, but I can tell you this—you can’t have a rape without a victim.

Todd Akin and Paul Ryan were co-sponsors of an anti-abortion bill that changed the definition of rape to only include “forcible rape.” I guess the forcible part is the way the woman’s body knows to activate the sperm blocking mechanism. Ron Paul once said he would support the rape exception only in the case of an “honest rape.”  Honest rape, legitimate rape... I’m waiting for a Republican politician to use the phrase “appropriate rape,” “accredited rape,” or “proper rape.”

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan say that Obama “raided” Medicare for $716 billion that he then spent on Obamacare. They make it sound like he went on a drunken binge, tossing out free contraceptives to minority women. The Romney team says the President is gutting Medicare. If Obama was really doing all the terrible things to Medicare that Mitt Romney is saying he is doing, Mitt would have chosen Obama to be his running mate. None of the savings that Obama applied to the Medicare system reduce benefits for people who rely on Medicare. It just reduces windfalls for companies that prey on Medicare.

On stimulus spending, Paul Ryan has a record so full of contradictions that it could belong to Mitt Romney. Ryan wrote letters to Obama’s Energy Secretary, requesting stimulus funds for his district, while publicly blasting the stimulus program. So Ryan was being a hypocrite back then as well as now. At least his hypocrisy is consistent. Ryan claimed “I didn’t know about the letters until very recently when they were brought to my attention.” They were all hand-signed by him. I guess he thought they were just really long autograph requests... printed up on his own official stationary, and addressed to the Secretary of Energy.
