Oklahoma: How to help | Live updates
President Obama announced today that he is going to limit the use of drone strikes. The new policy will sharply curtail when a drone can be used in places that are not war zones, because frankly, once a drone blows a house full of people up, that area becomes a war zone. Under the new policy, lethal force will be used only against targets who pose “a continuing, imminent threat to Americans.” They might want to rephrase that—they just described most of the Republican Party.
The White House acknowledged yesterday that four American citizens were killed in drone strikes in Afghanistan and Pakistan. You could question what those US citizens were doing in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Of course, you could ask the same question about what US corporations are doing in the Cayman Islands or Switzerland-and you can’t drone them.
Drone strikes are a sticking point with a lot of President Obama’s progressive base. It’s must feel good for him to be addressing an issue that actually is an issue, unlike all of this IRS and Benghazi crap. Obama foresees a time when the “war on terror” might end. You know, we can fight something without calling it a war. In fact, if the people you are fighting recruit their followers by calling the struggle a holy war, you might be better off not calling it a war.
While we have an epidemic of rape in the military, Glenn Beck is railing against what he calls the rape of the American people. Glenn is very upset about metaphorical rape. He has never said a word against real rape. The only surprising thing is that Glenn Beck sees rape as being a bad enough thing to use as a metaphor. I guess he can only use the Holocaust so often.
Rush Limbaugh has attacked IRS official Lois Lerner for being “filled with rage.” Just a quick bit of advice, Rush—if you’re criticizing someone for being filled with rage, try not to sound so angry when you do it.
And then, while Rush was already rummaging around in his own twisted subconscious, he came up with this gem: “I can see her with whips and chains.” Rush, I assume that you can see a lot of women with whips and chains. If you could just harness your mental image of Hillary dressed all in leather, maybe you wouldn’t need the Viagra. The one small comfort from Rush envisioning women with whips and chains is that it shows that on a certain level, even he realizes that he needs to be punished.
